Canada and Toronto 7/30

Canada

This wasn’t the first time we had been to Canada but it was our first time we drove to Canada. Since we were close to Niagara Falls earlier we decided to enter into Canada from there and it was the longest wait to actually pass into the neighbor country. We probably waited a good hour or so in our car waiting to just get across the bridge. After finally making it over and through the border control we headed for food. We found a hole in the wall place not too far from the falls called Old Crow Bistro. The food and people were quite interesting but the food was pretty good. I ordered a salad due to my sick stomach from earlier in the day. The one problem at this restaurant was the waiting on our food. Thankfully the waitress was nice and gave us a huge discount, which we did deserve because of how long we waited. From there we went to a campground that was the cheapest and most available we found. It was decent but it was next to a railroad. That was quite the surprise when we woke up to it passing our sites, scared the crap out of us and thought we were going to get run-over.

This was the first time we actually decided to pull out the tent and sleep in it. It was good for a change, we even let it rain on us for a little bit in the morning. I am not a fan of camping in the rain but it wasn’t bad and everything dried by the time we were ready to go to Toronto.

Toronto

We ended up misjudging the time and heading out a little late to the Toronto Blue Jays baseball game. The traffic was horrendous and we ended up getting to the game about 45 minutes to an hour late due to traffic jams. We thought we were taking the short cut and found out that it was the longest way to get there and then the city driving was crazy. I felt like I may have broken several laws but I didn’t care and just wanted to get to the game.

The Blue Jays played the Baltimore Orioles and they murdered them 9-1. Since they won they moved up in their division to first place and it was exciting to see and hear the crowds. The music they had at the game was not your average music, it actually sounded a lot like a child’s musical song. It was a little weird to be honest. We were happy to say we got to see another win for a team we were rooting for.

After the game they closed the top of the stadium and we headed to the CN Tower or Cartoon Network Tower. It stands as the 7th tallest free standing structure in the world at above 1800 feet. We bought our tickets and headed to the line. We waited about 2 hours before we made it to the top where we caught another elevator to the skypod that stands pretty close to the very top. It was tight and you could see and feel the structure swaying. The even had a pendulum so you could see the movement at that height. Back in the main part of the tower they have a glass floor that you can walk on and take pictures, it was crazy high and made you nervous to take a couple steps on the floor. What an experience it was! We somehow found the secret elevator line to go back down in less than ten minutes rather than wait like everyone else for an hour just to get down the tower.

By the time we got back down we were starving and needed to eat. I quickly checked Yelp for a place to eat and walked to the restaurant but decided to eat somewhere else. We were seated and our orders were taken quickly. We got some fried pickles as an appetizer but they weren’t very good. A half hour goes by and the waitress says the kitchen is a little slow right now, so we waited another 10 minutes just for the waitress to come back and say that it might be another 10 minutes or more to get our orders, we were starving and told the waitress we were leaving. Made it back to the car and drove down the road to a Tim Horton’s for some grub and back on the road again to cross back into the United States. This time it only took 5 minutes instead of what seemed like half the day to go into Canada. We stopped at a Walmart near the Ohio border to sleep for the night.

My thoughts about Canada are 1. People are very friendly and enjoyable to be around 2. Expect to wait more than what is bearable for your food 3. Don’t always trust Google Maps in Canada, it will probably lead you to the worst traffic imaginable 4. Canadians love to sing weird songs at Baseball games and 5. There should be more people working border control to get traffic in and out faster.
