Vermont and Cooperstown, NY 7/28

Vermont

The green hill state was amazing to drive through and see. Though not too much to explore there were still a couple places we had to visit. The first was in Sharon Vermont, Joseph Smith’s birthplace. There is a massive 38 foot stone obelisk that stands next to a flower planter that used to be Joseph’s parents farm house  The house was destroyed a long time ago but the foundation is still there made from stones. The obelisk was installed back in the early 1900’s and was transported from a rock quarry over 40 miles and weighed about 100 tons. How they got that large monument there is quite a marvel itself. It traveled mostly by rail but the last 4 miles were up a dirt road and a pretty steep road. It is amazing that it still stands in that very place.

The second and final place we visited in Vermont was the Ben and Jerry Ice Cream factory. It wasn’t too far off the plans so we got to eat some good chunky Ben and Jerry’s. It was packed and we had to wait about an hour before we could go on the tour. It was fun to see them making ice cream in front of our eyes. I think we had plenty of flavor for the day.

Cooperstown

We still had a good amount of driving before we made it to Cooperstown. We arrived around 6 pm to start our hall of fame museum self guided tour. We could have stayed all day in there reading about all the different artifacts but we only had 3 hours until it closed to explore everything. Alyssa was overwhelmed and over joyed to see all the different artifacts and learn of different baseball facts. We got a child’s game pamphlet and roamed the museum for all the answers. They said we could get a prize once we finish but the prize was only a couple baseball cards not worth much for all the effort but it was still fun to do.

We then explored the town for souvenirs and Alyssa was ecstatic to get a Dodgers jersey with the famous #42 for Jackie Robinson. That jersey will never go out of style and will be Alyssa’s pride and joy every time we root for the Dodgers.

We got a little hungry and asked the locals where the best place to eat in town was. Fortunately we were only a couple stores down from the best at Mel’s Restaurant. We got the best burgers and mac-n-cheese and were stuffed rolling out the door. Definitely great food.

We spent the night at a local KOA.
