Washington, Oregon 8/12-8/13

We left Rexburg and stopped off in Twin Falls Idaho to see the Shoshone Waterfalls and the temple there. It was really beautiful. We then went to Boise to have some lunch at Gyro Shack. It was really good and full of flavor. While trying to get back to the highway to continue to Washington and Oregon we came upon the Boise Temple. It looked a lot like the Las Vegas Temple with it’s multiple spires soaring into the skies. From Boise we drove all the way to Vancouver Washington, it was a beautiful drive once we made it to the Colombia river. There were evergreens and rocky mountain cliffs all along the river, it was like nature heaven. It was really beautiful.

Before stopping in Portland we went to go eat in Vancouver. We found a local pub and grill that had good Yelp reviews called Shanahans. We both got fish and chips because it was their special of the day and we really enjoy eating fish and chips. Turned out to be more like a small bar, they ID’d us just to go in. It wasn’t the best fish and chips but it was still enjoyable. After eating we went to Portland where Becca and Travis along with their daughter Winry live. It was great to finally see them again. We were completely tired from driving all day and so we made our way to bed to await the adventures for Saturday.

Saturday the 13th we went first went into Portland downtown with Travis and Becca to try some VooDoo doughnuts. They were doughnuts that had all types of cereal and chocolates and everything that sounds strange to be put on doughnuts. We also walked around the Saturday market in downtown and it was not your ordinary market, everything was strange and weird. Portland has the slogan of “Keep Portland Weird” and everything there is just that, weird!

From downtown we decided to drive up to Astoria, where many movies have been filmed. The Goonies and Kindergarten cop were some of the famous movies filmed there. We got to see the Goonies house along with the Jail and the jeep that has the bullet holes in it from the movie. We also saw the school where Kindergarten Cop was filmed. Astoria also has a column at the top of a hill where you have an amazing view of the water and surrounding towns. They have a staircase in the middle of it that goes to the top where they allow you go through balsa wood airplanes off. We definitely had to try it out and it was a lot of fun. Down the road from Astoria we got to see Cannon Beach where parts of The Goonies and Twilight movies were filmed. There were lots of cliffs and rocks right along the beach and plenty of sand to enjoy your own space. Parking was atrocious but we got lucky an number of times, there were cars parked all along the road just cause there wasn’t anymore spaces available.  We hiked a little along the shore line and were getting a little cold so we left and headed back to Becca and Travis’s. We actually got to their house faster than them because of a car crash on the highway. Turns out they stayed in the traffic while Alyssa and I got off the highway and went around it. Since all of us were hungry we went to Sweet Tomatoes. It was a branch off of The Soup Plantation, not the best food but good enough for all you can eat.
